Rachel Lee's Talk :
(https://mcomarartist.weebly.com/2nd-year-blog/previous/9) + images from Rachel's Sketchbook
"Rachael Lees came back for a second year. She discussed how she obtained a Distinction in her 2nd year. Showing us her sketchbook and research project. She tried to impart techniques that had worked for her."
in this session we got a bit more of understanding of how to achieve the best grade possible and how to maintain a high standard work by making sure were organized and recording information as we take it . Rachel also talked us through how to experiment as much as we can and want but always keeping in mind the theme and general idea of a project . she let us know that is really important to speak to the tutors every time we need help, opinion or from time to time guidance.
Founded in 1889, opened in 1905 it is now a Grade 2 Jacobean style building. It recently had a refurbishment by MUMA and the rear of the building is now glass fronted. Both entrances accomodate wheelchair access. "The development includes expanded gallery areas, a learning studio, study centre, an art garden and cafe. Developers have constructed a glass, stainless steel and brick extension consisting of two wings which extend into Whitworth Park from the back of the gallery building. The wings are connected by a glass promenade. The extension means the gallery is a third larger than previously."

Outside Art Talk : > Powerpoint presentation by Rachel Adis
" is art by self-taught or naive art makers. Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states , unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds ."
cultural context :"The interest in "outsider" practices among twentieth-century artists and critics can be seen as part of a larger emphasis on the rejection of established values within the modernist art milieu. The early part of the 20th century gave rise to Cubism and the Dada, Constructivist and Futurist movements in art, all of which involved a dramatic movement away from cultural forms of the past. Dadaist Marcel Duchamp, for example, abandoned "painterly" technique to allow chance operations a role in determining the form of his works, or simply to re-contextualize existing "ready made" objects as art. Mid-century artists, including Pablo Picasso, looked outside the traditions of high culture for inspiration, drawing from the artifacts of "primitive" societies, the unschooled artwork of children, and vulgar advertising graphics. Dubuffet's championing of the art brut – of the insane and others at the margins of society – is yet another example of avant-garde art challenging established cultural values."

" .. When I go into the glass houses and I see the strange plants of exotic lands , it seems to me that I enter into a dream... "
Judith Scott : (https://www.sleek-mag.com/article/outsider-artists/) Judith Scott was predicted to live only until her teenage years. Born with severe down syndrome, she was left in a state institution for over 35 years. Only when her sister finally became her legal guardian did she discover her artistic talent. Taking a fiber class at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, specially designed for people with disabilities, she was found to have a completely original approach to abstract sculpting. By 1999, she crossed over into the world of mainstream art with her first exhibition. The next showcase of her art will be at this years Venice Biennalle .
Eugene von Bruenchenhein: (https://www.sleek-mag.com/article/outsider-artists/)
"Eugene von Bruenchenhein is the best example of outsider artist as Renaissance man. His work spanned between painting, sculpture, poetry, ceramics, photography and drawing. Using his wife Marie as his muse, he would construct elaborate stages to photograph her on. In his own home studio, he managed to create thousands of disparate works of art. Yet, despite multiple attempts to sell his work to galleries, it was only after his death in 1983 that his work became better known."
